Cosmic horrors – the phenomenon is far from mass and, probably, this is why – not so frequent. However, nevertheless, the SCI-Fi horror horror with the action in outer space managed to form a fans with their army, despite the fact that there were not so many suitable projects in such settings, but judging by the fact that the last large Title went out in 2017, I about Prey (and that kind of not a horror), we can assume that the era of cosmo-crops. I went to my sunset, and even managed to pass it. But is it really so?
Against the backdrop of giants such as System Shock, Dead Space, Doom 3 and Alien: Isolation there were also less famous games from independent developers. And although they themselves were good, even good, and warmed the hearts of the fans of the genre on the Bezrybier, but still these games remained niche and did not allow them to feel the same as mentioned above the Mastodonts. But I really want to feel like a space engineer again, find myself in the devastated, blood -flooded corridors of the space station and, dying of fear, finely chop the rebel from the dead crew members with a plasma cutter; or wake up from anbiosis in the body of a hacker and withstand evil intrigues, repaired by artificial intelligence! In this post, I want to share with you information about the five upcoming releases of science fiction horror, whose action will unfold in space.
The Callisto Protocol
I want to start from the most important and largest announcement in my selection, which you have probably heard about and have been waiting for this game for a long time ..
Could you ever imagine that a person who once began his career as a developer from the game Barbie: Game Girl will ever invent such a thing as Dead Space? I say about Gleni Skofilde. After he laid the foundations of the future trilogy of the Dead Cosmos and brought his project to the very release, he left Visceral Games and created a new studio – Sledgehammer Games, which became the creator of several of the Call of Duty series. In 2019, Scofield joins the developer team Striking Distance Studios Inside the company PUBG Corporation. And just with the Striking Distance, Scofield began to score the spiritual heir to his own brainchild Dead Space – The Callisto Protocol.
If you missed the Callisto trailer for any reason, then immediately run to the utabs look! Those who studied the development history of Dead Space, remember that the dumb Writer of evil spirits should have been placed in a certain futuristic prison on another planet according to the original plan, from where the protagonist had to escape during the game. Personally, I believe that it should not pay attention to this, and if in the final product something like this will somehow be beaten, then the maximum from the fact that it could be squeezed adequate here-these are some minor references or Easter ladies, too much these games are different in spirit. You know how ID Software has with their doom, Wolfenstein and Commander Keen’s-well, that is, purely theoretically, it can be, but this will not have any particular influence on the main concept of the game. But this is only my opinion, we will see.

The question of how reasonable it is to call Dead Space the most terrible game of his generation remains open, but Scofield is sure that his brainchild has become at least one of the terrible horrors of that time, and in his future game he is going to repeat this at least this. Well, we will hold the fists for him and the Striking Distance team, I hope the guys will succeed, and we will get, if not the best, then another Ahrenic Space-Horror in the spirit of Dead Space. Negative Atmosphere
Who can be more devoted to the foundations of any game than the fans of this game? In the 2022nd year, another spiritual heir to the “dead space” is also planned, but not from the large figures of Gamdev, behind which the company-Tolstosum stands, but a small team of independent developers. Guys from SUNSCORCHED Studios We decided to cut off my own Dead Space with Black Jack and a bony woman Nyura, who tears the GG to parts at first glance. Their project, announced back in January 2019, they called Negative Atmosphere.
On their first post on Twitter, Sunscorched indicated that they were inspired by “Many Horror-Igra” work on this game. However, according to the first gameplay rollers, it became clear that only one behind these “many games” was hiding, but at the same time a cult Dead Space. Moreover, saying the creation of a new IP and the desire to open new game horizons, the authors were clearly orphaned, because according to the same video with the gameplay, it was clear that they were not only “inspired” by the Visceral game, but it was also copied to it! But we will not rush with the conclusions ..
As the development of the project is moving, after the attacks of journalists and gamers who hastened to hang on Negative Atmosphere the label “Clone Dead Space”, the game gradually departs from his inspirer. Of course, visually, but the fact that the style of the gameplay itself is still very similar to the "dead cosmos" is even very good and change, please, it is not necessary. Personally, I do not mind seeing two new Dead Space’a in one year at once.
But this time, as in the good old 2008, we will again find ourselves in the furious space of a huge spaceship. Humanity, wherever it lives and no matter what states, suffers from a new Cold War, and at that time 49-year-old Samuel Edwards, a military physician in the past, goes on a flight at the Nosto-Nostroma space tug … Khm … I’m sorry, Rusanov. Where and why – I could not dig information. In general, everything seems to go according to plan, but suddenly an unknown infection begins to spread along the ship, which forces people to mutate and turn into something terrible robots.
The main character remains the only survivor on the ship, but someone will be present on Rusanov and someone else who will try to survive just like GG-this is the artificial intelligence of Sierra. Only when interacted, they will be able to pass death, but whether Sierra will become a new Shodan or another court – this is an important part of the plot that we will not find out earlier than the game reaches the release.
The story itself is planned for 7 hours, but due to some game features, the gameplay will clearly require a little more time to pass.
Negative Atmosphere-Survival-Horror with a look from the shoulder, which makes the main bet on the atmosphere, the study of the environment and tense contractions. The head of the project Kalvin Parsons claims that the similarity with Dead Space is only superficially, in fact, Negative Atmosphere differs from it in many aspects. As an example, he cites the immersion of the future game. Here we will not move along the strict only existing route as in the creation of Visceral Games, in Negative Atmosphere we will be given freedom of choosing a path by which we can get to the ultimate goal and, apparently, this way to avoid skirmishes with some monsters. This will have been especially by the way due to the fact that the deficit of ammunition is promised to us brutal, shops where you could buy (as in the same Dead Space) will not be in the game.
The hero suffers from the post -traumatic syndrome, which is why he yells and curses on everything and everything as an old grandfather, and at the sight of passions and horrors on the ship, he gradually begins to go crazy. Negative Atmosphere will have to monitor not only the physical health of the protagonist, but also the mental, which Sunscorched Studios went a step further than the authors of Dead Space. Isaek, as you recall, also tilted, but exclusively in the scripts and on gameplay his condition was not reflected in any way. It’s another matter of Negative Atmosphere, but just exactly how we follow the psychosis of GG, it may not be clear-maybe it will be something like hallucinations from Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth or a stressometer from Afterfall, or generally something new-let’s see.
Another interesting feature of the game is the damage system: having received several injuries, it will not be possible to fit at once with one first -aid kit, the player will have to choose a specific place where the plantain is attached, and only it will be stolen. And again I remember the call of Ktulhu ..
The game will be similar to the Dead Space of the mechanic of the death of opponents, but it will not only be reduced to the shooting of the limbs: each monster has its own weaknesses-someone has joints, someone has a chest, etc. D., But most importantly, the player has to find all these weaknesses himself during the game. When the developments are asked about the difficulty of the game, whether the hardcore mode will be in it, Sunscorched replies that the game is hard by default, and this is due not only to difficult struggles and a shortage of cartridges, but also to the ability to independently focus on the ship. No compasses, illuminated paths and tips will have to carefully look at the surrounding objects and signs. The player can easily get lost, and according to the creators of the game, this will add atmosphere to play, make the player strain, experience discomfort and fear. The ship is divided into several zones, each of which can be explored freely, but at the same time, if you move from one zone to another, it will be impossible to return back.
Regarding the ways to intimidate the player, Parsons says that there will be screamers, but they use them carefully in the game, and the main emphasis is on the atmosphere. Well, of course, on the design of the monsters. We will withstand both mutants and the driving cars, but if the latter outwardly cause not such great interest, then organic creatures will be no worse than necromomorphs from the Dead Cosmos. This can be seen both in gameplay rollers and according to the concept arts, which the breasts shared with the players in their patreon.
Negative Atmosphere will not be introduced by either multipleers, nor coops, nor Lutboxes, or other satanic things, which personally is incredibly pleased.
Appearance can be deceiving, according to the words of the developers, there is more ahead of us than just the Dead Space clone. Not to say that on available rollers with fragments of gameplay from pre-alpha, the game looks good, the authors themselves recognize this, and also add that Negative Atmosphere will meet the standards of modern games, even modern aaa in places. Sunscorched Studios aspirations cannot but rejoice, but whether they will pull all this? I want to believe. On new screenshots on a twitter of developments, the game looks very juicy.
